East Africa experienced a major humanitarian crisis in 2011 due to drought. Famine was declared in parts of Somalia, and hundreds of thousands of Somalis crossed the borders into refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. Over 13 million people are affected.
Britain has provided lifesaving aid for over 3.5 million people across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, and played a leading role in the international response to the crisis.
